The Santa Barbara coastline has a south-facing aspect that juts east-west into the Pacific, not north-south as does the bulk of California, so all northward migrating whales pass through the Santa Barbara Channel. The sighting opportunities in these waters are not limited to gray whales; humpback whales pass through the channel between May and August, and blue whales — the largest creature that has ever lived — pass through between May and September.
Hendry’s Beach boasts large cliffs that come down to sandy shores, which stretch far enough for a long walk. If there’s one place to see pods of dolphins or even a breaching whale, all while keeping your feet in the sand, this is it. A pet-friendly beach, and a beautiful natural setting, Hendry’s Beach is a local favorite.
