It’s Spring Cleaning Time!

May 1, 2016 | Leave a comment

Hello my NC beauties…

This week, I started the BIG task of spring-cleaning.   I’m sure you know the drill: clean your home from floor to ceiling, open the windows to let in the fresh air, and switch out your heavy winter wardrobe for lighter springtime wear.

Like the rest of your body, your skin needs season-specific protection from the elements. The dry, cold winter weather has different effects on your skin than the humidity and sun in the summer. For this reason, we suggest making small adjustments to your skin care regimen as a new season begins.

Here are my top springtime suggestions to keep your skin and locks looking great…

Cleanse and Exfoliate: Exfoliating regularly helps you free your skin of that dry, rough layer that developed over the winter. Avoid scrubs with large crystals! Instead use a hydrating Sugar Body Scrub made of fine sugar grains for frequent exfoliation.   We add our exclusive blend of Coconut, Jojoba, Sesame and Rosehip Seed Essential oils, combined with granules of fine sugar that leaves your skin super soft.

Spritz your Mist: Face mists are fantastic pick-me-ups year round, but in summer’s scorching heat, a quick spritz becomes even more appreciated. Made from 100% pure certified organic Holy Basil, make it a fantastic toner for all skin types. Available in a travel friendly size, our Calming Facial Mist is perfect to pack in your bag for the beach or park.   Holy Basil’s hidden superpower is it’s calming effect on our nervous system and people suffering from anxiety will benefit from frequent use of Holy Basil mist.

Quench your Skin: After all that winter dry air, you need to rebuild your skin and replenish all that lost moisture. Adopt products that double as a moisturizer and a skin protectant.  Our richly textured, certified organic Shea Butter is blended with Organic Coconut Oil, Rosehip Seed Oil and Vitamin E to create the most luxurious treatment for your body. 100% all natural, this Shea Butter provides relief from everything to dry, sensitive skin to minor dermatological issues, such as sunburn and eczema. Essential vitamins and fatty acids found in Shea Butter, crucial to rejuvenating and moisturizing, work quickly to protect, nourish and soothe your skin.

After Sun: After a day at the beach you can’t undo the sun damage, but you can help your skin out. If you’re looking for nature’s healer look no further! Natura Culina’s Pure Aloe Vera After Sun Skincare is formulated with lavender and vanilla essential oil to heal and hydrate your skin after extended sun exposure. Not just for sunburns, apply Pure Aloe Vera After Sun Skincare to soothe and cool inflamed skin and even relieve itchy bug bites or apply it on daily base before your body lotion or butter for deeper hydration of your skin. One of Aloe Vera’s great powers is its ability to increase collagen production resulting in more youthful looking skin.

After Sun Aloe Vera Lotion

Keeping Your Locks Lovely: Depending on your hair type, you might find your hair is limp, frizzy, or difficult to control as the weather warms up. Summer conditions such as wind, salt water and humidity can make it tough to keep hair looking good. We developed a lightweight and nourishing, Hair and Scalp treatment that is infused with Ylang Ylang essential oil. For centuries, this highly effective oil has been used as a hair conditioner and a remedy for hair growth. We added Mint essential oil to help stimulate circulation for your scalp. Antioxidant rich Moroccan Oil and Black Cumin Seed Oil are blended to hydrate and heal dry hair. This is a good one to keep in your beach bag and use to tame those flyaways!

Happy Earth Day Today, and Every Day

April 22, 2016 | Leave a comment

Hello my NC beauties…

Today is Earth Day, and what better way to protect this planet than through a green beauty routine? Here at Natura Culina, natural never looked so good.

Happy Earth Day NC beauties!

Happy Earth Day NC beauties!

Here’s the reality – most of what we put on our skin (approximately 80% of lotions, potions, sunblock, oils etc.) enters our blood stream within 26 seconds.  Additionally, it is estimated by the Environmental Working Group that most of us women use 12-15 personal care products every day that can contain over 160 chemicals (most of which have never been tested for safety.) Gasp! How can that be good for our skin or our planet?!

Well you can rest assured that we will NEVER use any of synthetic ingredients or other harsh chemicals in our products.  We are Natura Culina – Nature’s Kitchen, and our products are made with love, in small batches, and packaged in a safe and green environment.

Allow me to take you through a daily “green and clean” beauty routine. Everyone’s skin is slightly different so we’ve added various organic essential oils added depending on what your skin needs…

Let’s start with cleansing…

Foaming Lavender Face Wash. We use Certified Organic Virgin Coconut Oil as the base and combine it with Lavender essential oil. Coconut Oil is well known for its antibacterial properties so it’s amazing for irritating skin issues like acne and eczema.

Then toning…

After letting your face completely dry we recommend spritzing our Nourishing Facial Mist which is pure certified organic Rose Water all over. NC beauties love our Rose Water Facial Mist loaded with antioxidants and vitamins that have anti-aging effect on our skin and help prevent environmental damage. It’s not only a toner, but also the perfect base for the final (and most luxurious) step!

Three wordsRegenerating Facial Oil!

This 100% all natural oil is an exclusive blend of Rosehip Seed Oil, Calendula Flower Oil, Rose Essential Oil, and Vitamin E. Rosehip Seed oil is rich in omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids that makes it very hydrating for our skin. The high content of anti-oxidants combined with Vitamins C and E helps brighten the skin and reduce skin discoloration.

Fun fact – did you know that by inhaling rose essential oils or mists inhibits water loss in the skin and lowers the concentration of the stress hormone cortisol in the body (stress has a profound impact on your skin!).

Natura Culina Skincare Set

At Natura Culina, we own the concept that ” green is clean” when it comes to beauty. We believe in clarity of nature and the healing power of plants, with the simple trust that you can achieve more with less. We want to educate our skincare users about the elements we are putting on our skin; similar to how we are educated about what we put into our bodies. We believe that everyone deserves to feel healthy, loved and cared for; therefore complete honesty through transparency and customer service is our core focus.

RELAX. RENEW. RECHARGE with us this Earth Day and beyond…

Exfoliation Part 2 – Dry Brushing

March 5, 2016 | Leave a comment

Hello my NC Beauties,

Are we all feeling nice and exfoliated? I’m hoping everyone was able to take a few minutes and spend some time on YOU! You might have noticed my most recent blog post was called Exfoliation Par t 1, I did that because after gushing on the benefits of using a scrub I realized that there was one type of exfoliation that I’d be remiss in not writing about. DRY BRUSHING! Yes ladies, another step that takes 5 minutes but definitely needs to be added to your daily routing because it’s important and shouldn’t be skipped. So what is dry brushing you ask? Well, I dug up this little gem from our friends at Mind Body Green for starters. We all know that our skin plays a huge role in supporting optimal detoxification BUT if covered with toxins and dead skin cells, there is no way to eliminate wastes from your body. That, my dear beauties is where this handy little tool steps in. Dry skin brushing not only brushes off the dead skin cells but also activates waste removal from your lymph nodes. And although this is more than enough of a reason to start, I love sharing as much as I can with you beauties so I’ll summarize the multiple benefits below.

Exfoliation Part 1 – Scrubs

February 23, 2016 | Leave a comment

Hello my NC Beauties!

The weather lately has been quite amazing…low 80’s in February here in Santa Barbara is always welcome! Yet I know the east coast is getting pummeled with snow and has been quite cold while our neighbors in LA have been experiencing 80-degree beach weather. This got me thinking about pressing the reset button on my skin since changes in weather usually have a direct effect on your skin. So, what’s my restart? Exfoliation! I’m constantly recommending it and want to explain why.

Exfoliation in general is a great way to get rid of the old, dead skin and boost circulation. As we age, the process of cell regeneration slows down which means that the body is slower to shed skin cells and generate new ones. When old skin starts to pile up on the surface, the result is rough, dry, dull skin resulting in excess oil and clogged pores. Proper exfoliation removes the barrier of dead skin cells clogging the skin and uncovers new skin cells below opening the way for moisturizing products to penetrate more deeply into the skin making them more effective.

A Fresh Start

January 26, 2016 | Leave a comment

Hello my NC Beauties,

We’ve gotten through the first month of 2016 and boy has it been quite the adventure so far. I don’t know about you but some of the more common themes I’ve seen come across my social media and email feeds have been “new year, new you” or “start this new year off with a clean slate” or “a fresh start to the new year.” I agree that the new year is a great reason to start things off anew and we all know the list of new year resolutions can go on and on, but let’s face it, sometimes it can all get overwhelming.

While I think starting off the new year with goals is great, I like to take a little bit of a different approach and keep it simple. I’ve seen a lot of things come across about diets, cleanses and detoxes and it got me thinking…is all of it really necessary?! I decided to take a little time to read and investigate. I’ll spare you the gory details but wow, Google really has some crazy stuff to be discovered.

Looking Into Our Past, Present and Future

December 31, 2015 | Leave a comment

Hello my NC Beauties,

The past few weeks have been quite busy and my heart continues to be filled with joy and gratitude during this holiday season! We’re working on some wonderful things that we’ll be sharing with you very soon…I can’t wait! I hope that every one of you spent this time doing what you love most and are ready to take on the New Year that lies ahead.

During this time of the year I always take a moment to look back and reflect on things. I started thinking about Natura Culina and how far we’ve come. If you ever wondered where the idea and my passion for natural skincare came from I’d have to say the seed was planted very early during my childhood. I grew up in Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) one of the most visited spa town in the Czech Republic, historically famous for its healing hot springs. As you can imagine, the experience of growing up in a beautiful European city, that was centuries old and visited by people from all over the world, exposed me to the natural healing powers of various spa treatments like mud baths, herbal wraps and massages. The focus was always healing and improving ones health through ancient rituals that had been used for centuries.

Winterize Your Skincare Routine

December 11, 2015 | Leave a comment

Hello my NC Beauties,
It’s been a while! The holidays are upon us and so is the winter season. I think during this time of the year we tend to think about taking care of others more than we do ourselves and it’s easy to let the “little things” fall by the wayside. BUT I’m here to remind you to take care of you… your skin will thank me later.

Sweater weather means cold wet/dry conditions that can wreak havoc on our skin. With so much happening during the holiday seasons, making changes to our skin care routine for winter weather isn’t always a top priority, we’re quick to bundle up in an effort to keep warm but often forget about protecting our skin that’s under all those layers.

I think it’s critical to do a simple analysis of your skin and make adjustments to your routine and find the right products that fit your needs, this is especially true in the winter. We know there are so many “hydrating” products available to women that it can make your head spin. Creams, gels, balms and oils…where do you begin and which is right for you? Rule #1, if the label is full of mystifying words and ingredients, leave it on the shelf! Rule #2, good, effective hydration begins with natural, organic ingredients.

Sugar & Spice & Everything Nice

September 28, 2015 | Leave a comment

Hello my NC Beauties,

During the last few weeks I’ve been receiving feedback from a few expecting mommas and it occurred to me that I’ve never really talked about using Natura Culina products during pregnancy or how pregnancy can affect your skin. In doing a little research I came across a few articles that perfectly summed up what exactly is going on…in one word, CHANGE!

Simply stated, in a nutshell…as if there wasn’t enough change going on in your life during pregnancy! This change can take on many forms and skin issues can vary pregnancy to pregnancy. We all hear about the “glow” that so many women have (or have been tricked into thinking they should have) while pregnant. Some women experience nothing but bliss during pregnancy (no morning sickness, great hair, skin and nails, very little swelling, etc.) and for these select few, we say…bless you, enjoy your pregnancy to the fullest! But the reality is, this is a small group and the majority of women experience changes during pregnancy, in different ways and at different degrees. Of the various skin issues that can arise here are just a common few.

Lenka Tinka: C.A.R.E4Paws is dear to my heart and does so much for animals in Santa Barbara County. I’m so curious as to how you got started and what inspired your mission to reduce pet overpopulation and keep animals out of shelters in Santa Barbara County?

Isabelle Gullo: I co-founded C.A.R.E.4Paws in 2009 with my husband, Carlos Abitia. We were shelter volunteers at the time, and we were tired of seeing all these animals being abandoned. We decided that rather than spending all of our time caring for the animals in the shelter―as much as that work is needed, too―we wanted to prevent them from coming in in the first place by attacking the root of the problem in our community:

Hooray! Summer is here again! Bring on the long days of lounging poolside with a great book! I get a good number of questions on social media and I thought, since it was timely, I would share a recent one from a group of junior lifeguards. They asked, given how often they are in and out of a chlorinated pool, what can they do to avoid dry, brittle hair? And more importantly, how can they prevent blonde hair from turning green? Such a great question, let’s see if I can’t answer that for you!

I want to be clear that completely avoiding the effects of chlorine is almost impossible unless you avoid the pool all together but there are some measures you can take.  Many opt for specialty hair products made for treating “swimmers’ hair.”  They are pretty effective and are sometimes, a necessary addition to your hair care routine. Since I myself am not a routine pool swimmer, I checked in with some of our loyal Natura Culina customers who happen to also be former olympic swimmers! They too struggle with how to treat their hair kindly and naturally with repeated pool use. Here is what they had to say:
