My hometown of Carlsbad in the winter

We’ve been talking a lot lately about winter weather and it’s effects on our skin and it has really got me thinking about the winters where I’m from. I grew-up outside of Carlsbad (Karlovy Vary), one of the most beautiful of the centuries old European spa cities in Czech Republic, surrounded by picturesque mountains Krusne Hory, that form the border between the Czech Republic and Germany. This is a region with cold, harsh winters and like many other places, it can be a major pain in the neck. As a kid, the real fun was when there were school cancellations on freezing snowy days when we could escape to play on the mountain….skiing, ice skating, playing ice hockey, cross country skiing – this is where I developed an great love of sports. But one of the best parts of winter there was Christmas, a dreamy, snowy, ideal white Christmas, which I have to admit, I miss here and always will…there is just no real Christmas without snow for me!

March product spotlight – SUGAR BODY SCRUBS

  • Based on coconut oil
  • Fine sugar crystals for gentle yet effective exfoliation
  • Fine crystals was a conscious choice because we can use this scrub on frequent and regular base without hurting/scratching the top layer of the skin….. large crystals in scrubs are scratching the top layer of the skin creating microscopic tears in epidermis leading to possible skin infections and aging of the skin. Natura Culina prefers small/fine crystals for full body exfoliation.

WHAT WAS CLEOPATRA’S SECRET?

cleopatra

Some historians claim that Cleopatra’s secret to supple skin and youthful glow was bathing regularly in the milk of donkeys.

The blistering sun and windswept sands of ancient Egypt caused dry skin, burns and infections for its people. Because of this, skin care was an important regimen for the Egyptians.

Body oils were so central to their well-being that workers actually received them as part of their wages. Both men and women used moisturizers on their skin to protect it from the arid climate. Sometimes people used honey on their skin — both for the fragrance and its ability to hydrate. Additionally, evidence shows that women sometimes used oil to remove stretch marks after pregnancy.

Over the weekend, Debbie Dingell and Susanna Quinn hosted a 40th birthday lunch for CBS This Morning co-anchor, Norah O’Donnell. Thirty of Washington’s most influential women came together to celebrate in Cafe Milano’s newly remodeled private, upstairs, wine room. Heart-felt toasts abounded from Susanna, Debbie and Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar. Susanna’s daughter, Jocelyn, produced a five minute slideshow of photos from Norah’s childhood, wedding, family and work. Norah was presented with probably the largest birthday card I’ve ever seen – a specially-designed poster board featuring images from the slide show and signed by all those in attendance.
